Making art accessible online

Give website visitors the chance to view each piece of art up close and with as much detail as they would in a physical gallery space.

The bold idea

Each artwork was reproduced in high-resolution imagery and we worked hard to ensure navigating the site is as intuitive and interesting as visiting the real thing.

The results

Time spent viewing art on the site has increased, alongside sales which have gone up by 35% year-on-year. This mirrors the increase in shop page views by more than double.

50,000 images to explore with artworks updated automatically on a daily basis

Bringing the artwork to life online required some very specific high-tech solutions, including innovative ways to store data, an automated colour picker and a powerful zoom tool.

The new collection site serves as a fantastic window to explore our world-class collection, opening it up as a resource for everybody to use, from leisurely enjoyment of the arts all the way through to academic research - Sir John Leighton, Director General, National Galleries of Scotland
